Earl West Cape.

About “Earl West Cape”?

Ragnvald Møre-Jarl, meaning “Earl Møre” was the earl protecting this area in the early Viking-age. This sounds like actually raising an earl to protect us and our area again. Something like that is the intention. So the first thing to do is to write a little about him.

Later this area was protected by Earl Lade in Trondheim, so I will also write about him.

Olav Tryggvason and Olav Haraldsson tried to use Christianity to unite a greater Norway. But that meant centralization of power at the expense of the earls, so Einar Tambarskjelve in Trondheim found himself in a dilemma.
It is interesting to see what significance Christianity and the church had for this history. It is still a current issue. especially after there was war in Ukraine.

Earl of Møre and Earl of Lade.

Harald Fairhair received support from many earls at the Battle of Hafrsfjord in the late 800s. Of these, Ragnvald Earl of Møre and Håkon Grotjardson Earl of Lade were  very important.  Earl Ragnavald became the father of Earls  of Orkney and Gangerolf (Rolon), who became ruler of Normandy. Harald Fairhair installed earls in the counties, but two of his sons were dissatisfied that they had not yet got kingdoms, so they killed Ragnvald Earl. One of Harald’s sons was named Eirik, he used power violently against both brothers and earls and was therefore called Eirik the Bloodaxe. Håkon Sigurdson Ladejarl enlisted the help of the Danish king Harald Bluetooth, to expel the Eirik sons who had killed his father.

According to some sources, the Holy Roman Emperor came with an army against Denmark and Olaf Trygvason was with them northwards from  the Gardariket (Kyev Rus). Earl Haakon was with the Danish king, at first they managed to resist, but then they lost and both him and the Danish king were forcibly Christianized. It seems that this had to be sometime between 982 and 984 (I have this from English wickipedia, otherwise I refer  to snl.no ) But when Hakon returned to Trøndelag, he returned to the old religion.

There was a break between Earl Haakon and Harald Bluetooth, because Håkon had become too independent, so the Danish king Sven Tjugebeard (son of Bluetooth) sent a fleet against him, but they lost in battle at Hjørungavåg in Sunnmøre, around 986.

West Cape.

In the background to the left of the picture we see West Cape, which is where the coast bends off between Bergen and Trondheim. To the right are the southernmost islands of Sunnmøre. The coastline from the West Cape northwards to Trøndelag is called Møre, so Earl Møre had once the task of protecting this area. In Trøndelag it was Lade-jarl who ruled.

The Picture over is taken from the end of the fjord to the left, we see just small part of the peninsula to the left.

Picture of Håkon Sigurdson Earl of Lade. He looks rather thoughtful in the picture. Yes, for there were those who tried to propagate Christianity by force. Since then, we knew very well how it went. The people were Christianized because they learned what Christianity was. It also had an impact on political power. Christianity seemed to unite people and thus resulted in the unification of a larger Norway. Christianity safeguards the interests of the people, and we expect an earl, petty king and great king to do so as well.

Nidaros-Gardarike (Kiev-Rus) policy.

It sounds reasonable that varjagar came from Varangians and thus from the Norwegian coast and Iceland. And that Nidaros functioned as a capital, with friendly relations with Kyev Rus, also through Svealand, so the Swedes were in it even though Sweden was not united into one kingdom. However, they had to have such an orderly society that the Vikings could muster on and off on the Swedish coast, as in Rotslagen, perhaps before the area got that name.

When Astrid Eiriksdottir was pregnant, she ran away from those who killed her husband. There are many quarrels as to where she escaped, but the English wickipedia takes one that is considered uncertain, that she escaped to her parents in Oppland, then escaped with her son to Sweden and through a perilous journey they came to the Kyev Rus, where they were well received. While this is not entirely reliable, we can conclude that the historic sources considered this a probable but dangerous journey. How did they manage it, how could it be arranged? With the help of the genus.

But since then, Olav Tryggvason has been considered the founder of Nidaros. Olav Haraldson tried to unify Norway with Christianity and was made king of Nidaros and received support in Eastern Norway as well, so he gathered a larger kingdom than before. But he had many against him and escaped to Sweden and then Kyev Rus.

He later returned and tried to unite the kingdom again, but now he made his way over the mountain, to avoid the Danish fleet in the Øresund.

Although he fell on Stiklestad, this had great significance for Norway.

So the Swedes helped arrange such journeys for the Varjagans, probably because they were on such journeys themselves as well.

What would it be like with a new Nidaros-Gardarike policy?

Satire:

There are now rumors of a consultation conference in Trondheim to make Nidaros the capital. First, there will be sighting at Stiklestad. Trond-Heim Giske is certainly one of the initiators.

Afterwards, there will be an Oktoberfest that will run over several days. Some will start  the Oktoberfest immediately, but fortunately those reminds us that we got the Pietism from Germany first and the Pietists started schooling  and abstinence movement to make the people sober and grow mature, independent and responsible enough to govern ourselves, so we could gain national independence.

There will be a delegation with the Nordland Line and one with the Dovre Railway. The fact that they choose the train has something to do with environmental protection, and then they demand that the trains be more precise. They bring with them a scheme to check the timetables, it is called routeization. They bring huge packed lunches and cook on the Russian-style train, where vodka is served, so there will be proper rusification (Rus meaning drunk). This is how they will continue during the conference as well, to put their stamp on it in competition with the Oktoberfest style. But shortly before they get to Trondheim it becomes wild chaos, for  some mean last stop is Stikklestad, some think it is Nidaros and others think it is the capital of Ruthenia, but they did not remember what it was called, whether it was Kiev, Novgorod, Moscow or something else.

There are convoys of fishing boats and pleasure boats from the Møre coast and further south in Western Norway and all the way from Finnmark. They sit in the livingroom and play cards and drink beer and whiskey, the whiskey they disguise as Irish coffee. And then they bring the martini, the plan is to dilute the vodka with martini, so that the party will not become vulgar, but rather enjoy life with French style. The strategy is obviously in the cards and in the drink, to put James Bond on the case, to try to find out where the healthy peasant spirit and academic sense went.

Seriously:

We have to be wary if the democracy really works properly, it has become clear in this recent past. It is the intention of  this website, as if I were an Earl Møre, so I can call myself Sivert Mørejarl. I’ll use the alias “Earl-West-Cape”, especially to use the domain earlwestcape.blod, as “ø” does not go quite well here. It will be both by writing history, all the way from Ragnvald Jarl and it will be by addressing important current affairs.

Norwegian Viking kings, such as Olav Trygvason and  Olav  Haraldson the Holy, fled to  the Kyev Rus and  returned to gather Norway into a kingdom and it was larger than the Norway that Harald Fairhair gathered.

There was friendly contact between the Nordic countries  and Kyev Rus and it was through the rulers being related. This was politically valuable and served as a loose over-national connection. The rulers of  the Kyev Rus were Vikings who adopted Christianity and it also seemed to keep people together in peace and this had great significance for the Christianization of the Nordic countries. In comparison, the Nordic Council has functioned as a loose linking of independent nations.

Nidaros had a tradition of acting as a capital of a land area without exact borders, in the middle of Scandinavia and with such loose connections all the way down to Kyev Rus. Some would even call it the capital of Scandinavia with Kyev Rus. This is surely most speculations and sure it was not like a capitol of an empire, but became important as a junction point of trade, more like Novgorod came to be later. I think it may well be possible to try to continue such a Nidaros policy, with Trondheim and Kiev as twin cities.
